This is a simple competition to create good community involvement across all age ranges. Download the entry form here.
- Participants pay £5 to enter.
- There is a fixed start date (distribution of buckets and seed potatoes – early February) and a fixed end date (harvesting and weighing - August) – dates yet to be confirmed.
- You receive a 3 gallon (14 litre) plastic bucket and some seed potatoes (weighed to be approximately equal in total weight, and all of the same variety and source) plus a sheet of basic instructions.
- You supply your own compost or soil and may depart from the distributed instructions if you think you know better.
- You can enter as a group to obtain sponsorship for your organisation.
- Potatoes entered in the competition must be grown for the whole season in the supplied bucket.
- At harvest – a public event – all participants bring their buckets to be inspected by the judges. Buckets are emptied and potatoes counted and weighed in public (or bagged for later weighing/counting).
- Prizes are awarded in two age categories – Seniors (13+) and Juniors (12 and under) - for:
- Heaviest single potato
- Largest total weight of potatoes above 1.5cm
- Largest number of potatoes above 1.5cm (we use a small wire ‘sieve’ for 2 & 3, any tubers falling through are discounted)
- You get to keep the bucket. Potatoes are returned to the grower or sold.
- Compost is collected by CRiB and ‘recycled’ for next year’s flower planters.
